When to Use Tags vs. Message Filtering Overview

Purpose: Determine when to use an email tag and when to use recipient attribute filtering in Communication.

Definitions

  • Profile Tag: List of email addresses collected externally from PlayerFirst, to be used for Targeted Communications. Upload of a tag list is done via “Profile Tags” page (see How To below).

    • Note: “Imported Profiles Without Any PlayerFirst Registrations” Recipient Type will apply.

  • Imported User: A list of data imported with more attributions than just email addresses (attributes will range depending on data available when importing).

    • Note: when filtering to imported users, use their user type (ie: Parent, Athlete, Coach) before filtering down to other attributes that may have been imported as well (ie: Zip, Position)

Best Practices & Notes

  • If you only have email addresses and no profile connection, create/use a profile tag.

    • Ex: brand is bulk cc’d on a competitor’s event, league or program email.

  • If specific athlete/customer information or attributes exists in your PlayerFirst database or were imported via as new users, use message and recipient filtering options.

    • Note: when filtering to imported users, use their user type (ie: Parent, Athlete, Coach) before filtering down to other attributes that may have been imported as well (ie: Zip, Position)

    • Ex: imported users with attributes (ie: position, gender) from an external database.

    • Ex: communicating with athletes that have previously registered for an event, league or program.

  • If importing users, determine the integrity of the data.

    • If high data integrity, import new users (athlete first name, athlete last name, email address, attributes, etc.)

      • Note: if an email address already exists for a user, it will attach to the existing account; a duplicate account will not be created.

      • Note: the new account username should be the full email address.

      • Note: a profile tag can be created in addition to the creation of new accounts if desired.

    • If low data integrity, do not create new accounts and instead create a profile tag (email address only and/or limited and inconsistent athlete information).
